“I am no magician,” says Dr. Vyacheslav Kiryukhin

What gave you the impulse to specialize in spinal disorders?

My German uncle. He is a doctor too. He works as a manual therapist, a chiropractor in a hospital. Chiropractic is a curative method based on the theory that a lot of diseases are caused by a slight displacement (prolapse) of vertebrae which may be rectified by manual adjustment rather than drugs. Unfortunately a lot of experts brush this method off with a benevolent smile. At least that is my experience.

What motivates you in your work?

My grandmother died of arthritis. She was dying for almost 10 years. First her joints ached, and she became overweight and immobile. But later she started to lose weight, her joints were swollen and she was in pain; the compresses and injections didn’t help… I sat next to her and couldn’t help her. If I couldn’t save my own grandmother, I wanted such cases to become less frequent and so I did everything to find a way how to treat it. You could say that arthritis is my personal enemy. I have a great motivation. Unfortunately I didn’t make it with my grandmother but I am glad that I can help others.

What would you say about the posture of today’s populace?

I don’t have any exact figures, but from what I can see it seems to me that it is not very good. Especially adolescents and young people walk with a rounded back and stooped shoulders. When I go to a swimming pool in the summer and take a look around I see that the majority of people could be my patients. But that is professional distortion, I guess…

What is the main cause of arthritis?

It is always linked to physical and mental stress. Usually, there is a serious crisis in the family or work life. This could be the death of someone you are very close to, the loss of a large sum of money, bankruptcy of your company, losing your job etc. In some cases, the first symptoms of arthritis may occur as if out of the blue within a few days after that, and within two months the disease may reach a stage where you need to see a doctor. Physical and mental stress are two friends. Physical stress sets the conditions for the disease and the mental stress follows it through.

Could you describe the course of your treatment?

It starts off with a massage. It is manual therapy but not the classical type. It looks the same, but it is different. Basically it’s information work which serves to unblock the spine through our brain. The brain has an encoded “healthy program” which gets blocked somehow. This may be due to stress in childhood or it may be linked to a difficult birth. Stress - that is something like a computer virus which is able to destroy a normal vital program in our brain. It blocks the centers which direct individual organs, thus causing chaos which leads to a progressive disease. These weakened or “switched-off” centers need to be activated from the periphery through the spine to the centre itself, where the healthy information is renewed in the brain cells.

The method I am using is non-traditional and highly successful. It is a compound of manual adjustments and physiotherapy which is individual and tailor-made for each patient. Their specific problems are decisive for determining the method. One therapeutic course is a complex of 10 – 15 successive massages and special exercises which may take an hour or more. Usually, I do three such therapeutic courses – one every half year in order to achieve a permanent result where the spine is returned to its anatomical norm. Medication can only bring a temporary relief.

So to sum it up, the method is based in principle on the stimulation of regeneration centers of our body. The activation of these centers goes from the damaged organ to the brain. The curative electric impulses which are thus activated through the spine have a retroactive effect on the damaged organ.

And the success rate of the treatment?

I cannot say that it is a hundred percent. Neither can I promise that to anyone because you can never know what tomorrow will bring. And I am no magician either. But what I am doing is based on natural and physical laws, and this is no fraud. If someone comes to me with a problem I say that I will try to do something with it. I never promise things I cannot deliver. Years of experience help me to assess what I can do and what is beyond my powers. A good doctor is one who doesn’t do what is beyond his powers.

Your oldest patient?

That was a tremendously lively ninety-three year old woman. Currently the oldest patient is an eighty-seven year old woman.

And the youngest?

A three-month old baby with a dislocated hip after the delivery.

What are the first symptoms of a spinal damage in children?

Rounded back, asymmetrical shoulders, tilted shoulders and chest, misalignment of the pelvis, asymmetry of chest and breasts, headache, easy fatigue of the back, aching stomach, navel tilted to one side and menstrual pains in adolescent girls.

Prevention and its importance are often emphasized in connection with all kinds of health problems. How is it with prevention in the case of a diseased spine?

It should be emphasized that prevention is only suitable for a healthy back, which is a fact a lot of people tend to forget. If your spine is damaged and you take up a reconditioning exercise or sport, the result may be a greater damage to your spine and a decrease of its mobility to a minimum.

What are the warning signs of a serious spinal problem?

If you feel discomfort when exercising (e.g. aches in joints or spine during swimming, cycling, golf, tennis, weight lifting) in a hot bath, after sitting in a car or in front of a computer for a long time, if you get up in the mornings only with difficulty or are woken up by pain during the night (e.g. in your shoulders, knees or hips), you should stop and start looking for the cause. I recommend having your spine checked in a neurological surgery by magnetic resonance imaging or x-ray. If you have a prolapsed disc by more than 4 mm or a spondylolistesis of more than 4 mm and a narrowing spinal canal you should consult a neurosurgeon. However, if doctors tell you that the disc is prolapsed by less than 4 mm and that you are basically healthy, that you only have arthritis and have to live with that, although you don’t feel well, cannot do any sport or live to the fullest then I would like to invite you to our centre for diagnosis and treatment. It is definitely worth it to have a healthy back!
